Veggies

No Garden is complete without a few vegetables growing in it. I have a whole section of the garden devoted to Veggies. It’s on the south side of the yard so it gets as much sun as possible and is in raised beds that have been here for years and are still productive as can be. A lot of food comes out of these beds, thanks in part to the compost so liberally applied,  and eating fresh produce is something to be savored like fine wine.

Every year is different but it seems that the yellow onions, the carrots and the beans were the best growers this last year. Also grew some good peas and some spectacular Bok Choy and Red Mustard. Greens are a favorite of the household and go into stir fries or steamed with a little vinegar and butter for a special treat.

I start a lot of the veggies in the greenhouse and this year I had fantastic luck with some heirloom tomatoes and hot peppers that I grew in the greenhouse. The peppers that is, not the tomatoes. They can grow outside but it doesn’t get hot enough here for peppers to do that well so I do them in the greenhouse and got  a variety of spicy ones this year. This year there were good crops and plenty to share with friends and neighbors as well as to keep in the garage over the winter. Yum!

    • Thanks for your comment. This was last year’s garden and already we have some things going in the ground for this year. In fact today we plan on putting the corn and tomatoes in the ground. Yay for veggies! : )

  3. I found what I was looking for. I wanted some pictures to show my husband how we might make a little vegetable garden. I think I remember looking at these pictures earlier. Even if we get nada, it will give him something to do. 🙂

    • Good attitude, and I’m glad my photos helped you. I think growing a garden just for all the wonder and joy it gives you, as well as some good hard work, is really good for you and gives you something really fun to do with your time, whether it feeds you a lot or not. It’s worth it… 😉

This is fantastic! Steve, do you use the same soil or put in new soil each year?

    • Thank you! We add compost and work it in every spring, and mulch as needed thru the year. We don’t use chemical fertilizer tho and try to do it all organically. The soil here is wonderful for growing things!
      Peace,
